U.S. President Donald Trump said today that Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem—whose resignation has been demanded by the opposition—will remain in office, assessing that she has done “a very good job.”
“No,” the Republican president replied firmly when asked by a journalist whether Noem would step down from her position.
Trump also described as “very sad” the death of a second American protester, who was shot dead by federal agents on Saturday in Minneapolis.
Although he did not use the term “killer,” which his adviser Stephen Miller had used to describe the 37-year-old Alex Preti, who was shot and killed by immigration enforcement agents (ICE), Trump emphasized that the victim should not have been carrying a weapon during a protest.
Asked whether he considered Alex Preti a “killer,” the U.S. president replied in the negative, but added that he “should not have appeared with a weapon” at a protest rally, calling the incident “a very unfortunate event.”
In an effort to defend the actions of federal agents, some officials have stressed that Preti was armed—an argument strongly rejected by the opposition and organizations advocating for gun rights.
