U.S. President Donald Trump has refused to sign the joint G7 leaders’ statement that calls for de-escalation of tensions between Israel and Iran, Rks News reports.

The document, drafted during the G7 summit in Canada by European officials, reaffirms support for Israel’s right to self-defense and insists that Iran must not be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons.

Despite Trump’s refusal, officials involved in the drafting process remain hopeful that he may still add his signature at a later stage.

This marks another instance of divergence between the U.S. and its traditional allies, particularly on Middle East policy, and raises concerns about the cohesiveness of Western diplomacy in handling the Iran-Israel conflict.
