U.S. President Donald Trump has stated that allowing Russia to participate in the 2026 FIFA World Cup could serve as an “incentive” to end the war in Ukraine, according to the BBC.

Russia has been suspended from international football competitions by FIFA and UEFA since 2022, following the invasion of Ukraine.

Trump, who campaigned on a promise to end the conflict if re-elected in November 2024, said during the first meeting of his administration’s task force for the 2026 World Cup that reintegrating Russia into the tournament could contribute to peace efforts.

Under current regulations, Russia is not permitted to participate in the 2026 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Qualifications began in September 2023, and apart from the three host nations, 45 slots remain.

During a conversation with FIFA President Gianni Infantino, Trump acknowledged that he had not been aware of Russia’s suspension. Infantino responded that Russia remains suspended “for now,” but expressed hope that conditions might change, allowing their return if peace is achieved.

“That could be a good incentive, right?” Trump said. “We want them to stop. Five thousand young people are dying every week – it’s just unbelievable.”
