U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he and Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed during a phone call on Wednesday to begin “negotiations” to end the war in Ukraine and that they would “work very closely together” to resolve the conflict.

“We each talked about the strength of our respective nations and the great benefit we will have one day by working together,” Trump said in a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, revealing details of a conversation that followed a prisoner exchange agreement between the two countries.

“But initially, as we both agreed, we want to stop the millions of deaths that are occurring in the war between Russia and Ukraine.”

The Republican president said that the leaders also “agreed for their respective teams to begin negotiations immediately” and that they would inform Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky about their conversation.

He said the phone call was “long and extremely productive.”

“We discussed Ukraine, the Middle East, energy, artificial intelligence, the power of the dollar, and various other issues,” Trump said.

The Kremlin stated that Putin and Trump had spoken for nearly an hour and a half on the phone, and that both leaders had agreed to meet.
