U.S. President Donald Trump has stated that the United States could consider lifting sanctions on Russia as part of a potential peace agreement to end the war in Ukraine.
Speaking to reporters on the South Lawn outside the White House before departing for a working visit to Texas, Trump said Washington would welcome steps that could help bring the conflict to an end.
“I would very much like to ease the sanctions,” Trump said, referring to the possibility of reducing restrictions imposed on Moscow and expanding economic and trade ties between the United States and Russia.
The U.S. leader also confirmed that he had recently spoken with Russian President Vladimir Putin, emphasizing that both sides expressed interest in ending the war as soon as possible.
“We would like to see the war end, and we would like to finish it as quickly as possible,” Trump added, though he did not provide details on whether further high-level contacts or negotiations are currently being planned.
The remarks come amid ongoing international discussions about possible diplomatic pathways to halt the fighting in Ukraine, with sanctions on Russia remaining one of the key issues shaping any future settlement.
