U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that he is recommending a 50% tariff on products from the European Union, starting on June 1, 2025, reports Rks News.
This move comes as a result of deep trade disagreements with Brussels, which Trump accuses of unfair trade barriers and practices against the United States.
In a post on the social media platform Truth Social, Trump stated:
“The European Union, which was formed primarily to take advantage of the United States in TRADE, has been extremely difficult to deal with. Their powerful trade barriers, high value-added taxes (VAT), ridiculous corporate penalties, non-tariff barriers, currency manipulation, unfair and baseless lawsuits against American companies, and more, have led to a trade deficit with the United States of over $250 billion a year a completely unacceptable figure.”
He added that the tariff would not apply to products that are made or assembled in the U.S.:
“There will be no tariff if the product is built or manufactured in the United States. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
