U.S. President Donald Trump said that security guarantees for Ukraine will be provided primarily by European countries, while the United States is ready to assist them. He made the remarks in an interview with The Daily Caller.
Asked whether he would consider offering Ukraine air support as part of such guarantees, Trump replied:
“Maybe we’ll do something. Listen, I’d like to see something worked out. They’re not our soldiers, but five to seven thousand, mostly young, are being killed every week. If I could stop that, and have a plane flying overhead once in a while, it would be mostly the Europeans, but we—we would help them. They need it, and we would help if we could do something.”
However, Trump stressed that he has no intention of sending American troops to Ukraine.
“I don’t think it can be resolved without some kind of security guarantee, and we’re not going to have soldiers on the ground or anything like that. But if we can help Europe, we will,” he added.
Trump also reiterated that the Ukraine conflict is not America’s war, emphasizing that he inherited it from his predecessor.
“I inherited this war. And all I’m trying to do is put out the fire,” the President remarked.
