US President Donald Trump stated from the White House that military actions against Iran have, in his view, prevented a dangerous escalation that could have led to a nuclear war.
Speaking from the Oval Office, Trump initially criticized Congresswoman Ilhan Omar before addressing the conflict with Iran.
He claimed that if the US had not struck Iran’s nuclear program, Tehran would have developed a nuclear weapon within a month. According to Trump, such a weapon would have first been used against Israel and then in the broader Middle East region.
“It would have been a nuclear war that could have evolved into World War III, a war from which nothing would remain,” Trump said, adding that the American intervention was “a huge thing for the world.”
The US president also emphasized that Iran should not have nuclear weapons and claimed that the country lacks sufficient military capabilities. He added that one of the main challenges is the uncertainty over who currently represents the Iranian leadership in negotiations.
“My biggest problem is that I don’t know who we are talking to, because no one has heard of these people,” Trump said.
