U.S. President Donald Trump has doubled tariffs on all steel and aluminum imports from Canada to 50% in retaliation for Ontario’s decision to impose a 25% tariff on its electricity exports to the U.S.
In a post on his platform, Truth Social Media, Trump announced that he had directed his Commerce Secretary to enforce an additional 25% tariff on Canadian metal products, effective Wednesday morning.
“Additionally, Canada must immediately remove its outrageous anti-American farmer tariff of 250% to 390% on various U.S. dairy products, which has long been considered unfair. I will soon declare a national emergency on electricity within the threatened region,” Trump wrote.
He also warned of a sharp increase in tariffs on Canadian automobiles starting April 2 if other long-standing trade barriers are not removed.
