U.S. President Donald Trump said Iran is “engaging in serious talks” with the United States, following his recent threats of possible military action and the increased deployment of U.S. military assets in the Middle East.
Speaking to Fox News on January 31, Trump stated that Tehran has opened communication channels with Washington amid heightened regional tensions.
“They are talking to us and we’ll see if we can do something. Otherwise, we’ll see what happens. We have a large fleet deployed there,” Trump said.
“They are negotiating.”
Later, addressing reporters, Trump reiterated that Iran is “engaging with us in serious discussions.”
Unclear Framework for Talks
It remains unclear under what circumstances or through which diplomatic channels the talks are taking place, and no official details have been released regarding their scope or objectives.
Trump also confirmed that U.S. allies in the region have been informed about the possibility of military strikes, citing security concerns.
“We can’t tell them the plan. If I told them the plan, it would be almost as bad as telling the media — actually, it would be worse,” Trump said.
Unrest Inside Iran
The developments come as Iran has been gripped by internal unrest since December 28, 2025, after peaceful protests erupted in Tehran. Demonstrators have demanded that authorities curb inflation and stabilize the national currency, which has recently fallen to record low levels.
The protests have added further pressure on Iran’s leadership, as economic instability continues to fuel public dissatisfaction.
