U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Monday that he plans to impose a 100% tariff on films produced outside the United States and “substantial tariffs” on countries that do not manufacture furniture domestically.

Trump criticized the loss of U.S. film production in California and the furniture industry in North Carolina to foreign competitors, claiming the new duties would help restore these sectors. In posts on Truth Social, he said the theft of U.S. films by other countries is “like stealing candy from a baby.”

The announcement raises questions about enforcement and specifics. Previously, in May, Trump had made similar tariff threats, but the White House quickly softened the rhetoric and no measures were implemented. The new tariffs on kitchen, bathroom, and upholstered furniture imports are expected to take effect Wednesday, though the White House has not commented on the latest threat.
