U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to block the opening of a new international bridge connecting the United States and Canada, criticizing the northern neighbor over various economic issues, CNN reported on February 10, 2026.

Trump stated in a Truth Social post that he “will not allow” the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge, a two-kilometer structure linking Detroit, Michigan, and Windsor, Ontario. The bridge construction is complete and expected to open later this year following a testing period.

I will not allow this bridge to open until the United States is fully compensated for everything we have given them, and it is also important that Canada treats the U.S. with the justice and respect we deserve. We will begin negotiations immediately,” Trump wrote.

It remains unclear how Trump plans to block the bridge’s opening. CNN requested comments from the White House, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, and the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority, which manages the project, but no responses were received.
