In an interview with Fox News aired on Sunday, U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to deploy troops to San Francisco in order to increase the military presence in Democrat-controlled cities.
“Then we’ll go to San Francisco,” Trump said. “The difference is, I think they actually want us in San Francisco. San Francisco used to be one of the great cities of the world. And then, about 15 years ago, it went bad. … We’ll go to San Francisco and make it great again.”
His remarks follow the recent deployment of the National Guard and other federal forces in cities like Los Angeles, Washington D.C., and Memphis — in some cases without approval from local leaders, according to The Guardian.
In response, San Francisco and California officials — including Governor Gavin Newsom — criticized the plan as an authoritarian overreach, emphasizing that the city’s crime situation is already improving.
