US President Donald Trump has justified the newly imposed travel ban on citizens from several countries, describing it as a necessary measure to prevent terrorism threats and address national security challenges, American media outlets report.

Trump stated that, with the exception of Iran, most of the countries included in the ban are not on the official US list of state sponsors of terrorism. He explained that some nations, like Libya and Sudan, were included due to their lack of control over passport issuance. Others, he noted, have failed to provide criminal data or have refused to accept their citizens deported from the US, according to the BBC.

“Some of these states are involved in armed conflicts, and cannot effectively cooperate on security matters,” Trump said, further elaborating on the rationale behind the broad restrictions.

Regarding the limitations placed on tourists, businesspeople, and students from seven additional countries, Trump clarified that these nations were selected due to high rates of visa overstays by their citizens.
