U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Saturday, August 30, 2025, that he plans to issue an executive order mandating voter identification for every ballot cast, Reuters reports.
“The voter must be identified for every vote. NO EXCEPTIONS! I will issue an executive order for this purpose!!!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
He further stated that there should be no mail-in voting, except for the seriously ill and military personnel serving abroad.
Trump has long questioned the integrity of the U.S. electoral system, continuing to falsely claim that his 2020 loss to Democrat Joe Biden was due to widespread fraud. Both he and Republican allies have promoted unfounded allegations of illegal voting by non-citizens, despite evidence showing such cases are extremely rare.
For years, Trump has also pushed for the elimination of electronic voting machines, advocating instead for paper ballots and manual counting — a process election officials warn is slower, more costly, and less accurate than machine tabulation.
