President Donald Trump said that the United States and Iran have “major points of agreement” after talks continued late Sunday evening with two senior American envoys, according to CNN.
“We’ll see where it leads,” Trump told reporters at the airport in West Palm Beach, where he spent the weekend.
“They went, I would say, perfectly,” he added, noting that Iran initiated the discussions. “I would say that if they continue in this way, it will end that problem, that conflict, and I think it will end it very, very significantly.”
Trump confirmed that his envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are involved in the talks, but he was unclear about who exactly the U.S. is engaging with in Iran, other than describing a “respected leader” who is not Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei.
“They really want to make a deal. And we also want to make a deal,” Trump said, adding that further phone calls would take place on Monday, followed by a face-to-face meeting “very, very soon.”
“We are doing a five-day period; we’ll see how it goes. If it goes well, we’ll finish by resolving this. Otherwise, we just continue to hit them with full force,” he said.
Trump emphasized that any agreement would require Iran not to acquire a nuclear bomb — “We want no nuclear bomb, no nuclear weapons,” he said — and that the U.S. would take control of highly enriched uranium from Iran.
“Nuclear powder. We’ll want it. And I think we’ll get it. We’ve agreed on this,” he added.
