A crucial phone call between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected soon, as tensions rise over violations of a trade agreement involving critical mineral exports, Reuters reports.
The announcement came from U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who confirmed that preparations are underway for high-level discussions between the two leaders.
China Accused of Breaching Trade Deal on Critical Minerals
President Trump has accused China of breaking a key trade agreement by reimposing export restrictions and tariffs on critical minerals—materials essential to global industrial supply chains, including those of India and Europe.
“What China is doing is rerouting essential products away from agreed partners,” Bessent said during an interview on ABC News’ “Face the Nation.”
He added: “That’s not the behavior of a reliable trade partner.”
The U.S. government is especially concerned about China’s role in the global supply of rare earth elements and other minerals critical to defense, technology, and renewable energy sectors.
White House Expects Call to Address Breach
While no specific date has been confirmed, the White House expects the upcoming Trump-Xi call to directly address the mineral dispute.
Bessent noted that the disruptions could either stem from internal issues within China or reflect deliberate economic pressure.
White House economic advisor Kevin Hassett added that the administration is anticipating a “very constructive and positive” exchange between the two leaders, though he did not provide a timetable.
Background: Trade Tensions and Geneva Accord
The dispute falls under the broader framework of a Geneva-based trade agreement the two nations previously signed, aimed at ensuring uninterrupted trade in critical commodities. The Trump administration claims that China’s recent actions undermine that pact.
Although China confirmed in April that no official conversation has yet occurred, recent developments appear to be fast-tracking diplomatic engagement.
As both economic and geopolitical stakes continue to rise, a direct conversation between Trump and Xi could reshape global trade dynamics and set the tone for future U.S.–China relations. The world is closely watching the outcome of this anticipated exchange.
