Steven Witkoff, the special envoy of U.S. President Donald Trump, arrived in Moscow this morning, just days before the American ceasefire deadline for Russia’s military offensive in Ukraine expires.
The high-level U.S. official was welcomed at Vnukovo Airport by Kirill Dmitriev, the special representative of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Witkoff is expected to hold key meetings with senior Russian leaders in an attempt to de-escalate the conflict. Following his visit, he will report directly to the White House.
As Trump’s chief advisor for peacekeeping missions, Witkoff has already held multiple meetings with Putin, though none have so far led to a shift in Russia’s approach to the war in Ukraine.
President Donald Trump has made it clear that he will announce a decision on new sanctions against Russia after Witkoff’s visit. The upcoming sanctions will also target countries that continue importing energy from Russia, signaling a broader effort to apply international pressure on Moscow.
