President Donald Trump’s envoy to Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, has stated that Russia’s concerns about NATO’s eastward expansion are justified, Rks News reports.
In an interview with ABC News, Kellogg emphasized that the United States does not support Ukraine’s accession to the military alliance, underlining that this issue is not currently on the negotiation table.
“It is a legitimate concern,” Kellogg said, referring to Moscow’s request for a written guarantee that NATO will not expand to include Ukraine and other former Soviet republics.
He further added that the admission of a new country into NATO requires unanimous approval from all 32 member states, noting that some of them are currently opposed to Ukraine’s membership.
