The U.S. Department of State has canceled refugee travel to the United States.

“All previously scheduled refugee travel to the United States is being canceled, and no new travel bookings will be made,” stated the memorandum from the Department of State, without specifying how long the suspension will last.

The memorandum, which suggests that the suspension should take effect immediately, follows an executive order signed by President Donald Trump on Monday, which stated that refugee admissions to the U.S. would be suspended starting January 27.

The order states that the U.S. “lacks the capacity to absorb a large number of immigrants, and in particular, refugees.”

“This order suspends [the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program] until such time that further entry of refugees into the United States aligns with the interests of the United States,” it reads.
