Turkey has lifted the additional tariffs it imposed on certain U.S. imports in 2018. A statement from the Turkish Ministry of Trade recalls that in 2018, the United States imposed extra tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, and Turkey responded by introducing an “additional economic burden” on some products.
The tariffs being removed cover a range of U.S. goods, including automobiles, beverages, tobacco, cosmetics, and certain food products.
The announcement also noted that efforts will continue to reach a trade volume target of $100 billion between Turkey and the United States, as well as to develop policies to expand cooperation into new areas.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan will visit the White House carrying an order for 250 Boeing aircraft for Turkish Airlines. Turkey’s major priority is to return to the F-35 fighter jet program, though this requires congressional approval. The F-16 fighter jet program is also on the agenda.
Key topics in Erdoğan’s White House discussions include developments in Gaza and Syria, with Ankara seeking to integrate Kurdish forces there into the Syrian army.
