Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced a significant new natural gas discovery in the Black Sea, unveiling a reserve of 75 billion cubic meters (bcm) at the Goktepe-3 well, located at a depth of 3,500 meters. The announcement was made during an event in Istanbul, as reported by Gazeta Sinjali.

With this discovery, Erdoğan stated, “we will meet the natural gas needs of Turkish households for 3.5 years.” He described the reserve as a strategic achievement with an estimated economic value of around 30 billion dollars, according to Reuters.

Currently, the daily gas production at the Sakarya field stands at 9.5 million cubic meters, as Turkey continues to bolster its energy security by developing domestic resources and strengthening international partnerships.

This new find marks a crucial step in Ankara’s ambition to reduce reliance on energy imports, which presently account for over 90% of Turkey’s energy consumption.
