Turkey has discovered new oil reserves amounting to 57 million barrels, with an estimated economic value of around 4 billion USD. The announcement was made by the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Alparslan Bayraktar, during an interview with the Anadolu Agency.
The Minister also confirmed that a new natural gas reserve has been found in the Göktepe-3 well in the Black Sea, containing about 75 billion cubic meters of natural gas. According to Bayraktar, this volume is enough to meet the country’s annual gas demand for about 1.5 years, or supply households for around 4.5 years.
“The discovered gas reserve represents an economic value of about 30 billion dollars,” Bayraktar said. He added that intensive exploration on land — especially in the Diyarbakır, Gabar, and Batman regions — has led to the identification of significant new oil deposits.
The Minister noted that the exploration process is continuing at a rapid pace, and more discoveries are expected by the end of the year, which could further boost Turkey’s energy capacity and reduce its dependence on imports.
