Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has stated that Russia has begun softening its territorial demands on Ukraine within the framework of possible peace negotiations.
According to him, Moscow is no longer insisting on full control over the four regions – Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia – as it did at the beginning of the war.
Now, Fidan said, Russia is willing to accept the current frontline as a potential border, except for a remaining portion of the Donetsk region, over which it still demands control. This area represents about 25–30% of the region’s territory, which is currently under Ukrainian control.
Kyiv, on the other hand, has rejected any idea that involves surrendering territories as part of a peace agreement. Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump has suggested that the parties could reach peace through a territorial exchange – an idea that has found no support in Ukraine.
Turkey has previously acted as a mediator between the two countries, organizing meetings between Russian and Ukrainian officials, though without any concrete results so far.
