Turkey has introduced its indigenous air defense system, dubbed the “Steel Dome”, marking a significant advancement in the country’s military capabilities.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan unveiled the system on Wednesday, highlighting Turkey’s rapid push to strengthen national defense capabilities. The system positions Turkey alongside countries like Israel, which operates the Iron Dome, and signals Turkey’s focus on territorial protection rather than overseas defense, contrasting with U.S. multi-layered defense strategies.

Features of the Steel Dome

The system, developed by Aselsan, integrates:

  • Mobile launchers
  • Radar networks
  • Command and control systems

It is designed to intercept missiles, drones, and manned aircraft at various altitudes, using both laser strikes and electronic jamming. Advanced AI-assisted tracking ensures rapid, cost-effective, 24/7 protection.

Investment and Strategic Importance

  • Total cost: $1.5 billion — Turkey’s largest-ever defense investment
  • Intended to protect fixed sites such as military bases, airports, and energy infrastructure
  • Mobility: Can be deployed wherever needed

Erdoğan emphasized that the system allows Turkey to meet up to 80% of its military needs domestically, saving significant resources that would otherwise be spent abroad.

Defense Industry Growth

Turkey has rapidly expanded its domestic defense industry:

  • Defense exports reached $990 million recently, a 129% increase from the previous year
  • Total sales from January to July 2025 amounted to $4.6 billion
  • Erdoğan predicts exports could reach $20 billion within a few years

The Steel Dome underscores Turkey’s commitment to enhancing national defense capabilities, including the development of aircraft, naval vessels, and missile systems, drawing international attention.
