Massive protests have erupted in Turkey following the imprisonment of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoğlu, a key political rival to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The protests, fueled by widespread opposition to Erdoğan’s rule, have brought together diverse groups across the country.

For nearly two decades, Erdoğan has held a tight grip on power. However, his leadership now faces one of its biggest challenges: a wave of protests ignited by the detention of Imamoğlu, a rising star in the opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP). Imamoğlu’s 2019 victory in the Istanbul mayoral race was a blow to Erdoğan, as it broke decades of control over the country’s largest and most influential city. His re-election in 2019 only strengthened his position as a political threat to Erdoğan.

Last month, Erdoğan’s government accused Imamoğlu of terrorism-related charges, a claim seen as politically motivated. Imamoğlu was arrested, sparking outrage across the nation.

Baykar Sivazliyan, an expert on Turkish affairs, believes that the charges were part of an organized effort to eliminate Imamoğlu as a political contender ahead of future elections.

What started as outrage over Imamoğlu’s arrest has grown into a broader movement demanding political change. The protests have attracted secular youth, Kurdish activists, left-wing groups, and even nationalist factions that were once aligned with Erdoğan.

The protests have drawn millions into the streets, with many describing the situation as a struggle for the future. Tarik, a Kurdish photographer, describes the mood as “a future slipping away” for younger generations. The movement is not just about opposing Erdoğan but about reclaiming a democratic future.

Erdoğan’s administration has responded with arrests, censorship, and crackdowns. Nearly 2,000 people have been detained, including journalists and protest leaders. Despite the government’s intimidation tactics, the protests continue, with demonstrators standing firm in their fight for their rights and their future.

For many, this moment represents a critical turning point. As one activist put it, “Without a doubt, these protests will bring an end to Erdoğan’s rule. There’s no turning back now.”
