Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan stated that he had asked Russian President Vladimir Putin to support the ongoing negotiations between Gazprom and Botas, Turkey’s state energy company.

“As you know, Turkey meets most of its natural gas needs through supplies from Russia. It is essential that this continues smoothly and without interruption. Currently, discussions are ongoing between Botas and Gazprom. We have asked Mr. Putin to support this process,” Fidan said at a joint press conference with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Moscow.

Fidan did not elaborate on the details of the negotiations or the type of support Turkey is seeking from the Russian side.

In autumn 2023, Turkey’s Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar said that Ankara expected to receive more reasonable prices for Russian gas in the coming years and hoped that Gazprom would agree to this.
