Two individuals hiking on Mount Korab have been severely poisoned after mistakenly consuming a toxic plant, according to the Kosovo Mountain Search and Rescue Service (KMSRS).

The tourists—one a local Albanian from the area and the other a German national—began experiencing rapid and severe health deterioration shortly after ingestion.

“First aid was administered and their condition was monitored, but due to the critical state of their health, an air evacuation was requested,” reads the official KMSRS statement.

Full Statement:

“On July 7, 2025, KMSRS received a call regarding an emergency on Mount Korab. A local Albanian resident and a German tourist had unknowingly consumed a toxic plant (now identified), and their condition rapidly worsened.

Fortunately, one of the tourists remained conscious and had mobile network coverage, allowing him to call for help and send their exact coordinates.

Two KMSRS members, who happened to be nearby, reached the location quickly and administered first aid. Due to the critical condition of the victims, air evacuation was urgently requested.

Albanian authorities swiftly dispatched medical personnel and a rescue team via helicopter. Upon arrival, they performed emergency procedures and transported both patients to the University Hospital Center in Tirana.

We commend everyone involved for their professional work and prompt coordination.
We wish the patients a full and fast recovery.”
