Following the announcement that the United States will reduce its troop presence on NATO’s eastern flank, including at Romania’s Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base, the U.S. Ambassador to NATO, Matthew Whitaker, commended Romania for its growing role in regional defense and its strong alliance with Washington.
Romania’s Ministry of Defense confirmed that the decision was anticipated due to shifts in U.S. strategic priorities, while around 1,000 American troops will remain stationed in the country.
Ambassador Whitaker emphasized that Romania has proven to be a capable and responsible ally, highlighting its consistent cooperation with the U.S. over more than two decades of NATO membership.
“Across NATO, allies like Romania are demonstrating increasing capability and responsibility. For over 20 years as a NATO member, Romania has worked closely with the United States to achieve our shared defense objectives. This partnership remains stronger than ever,” Whitaker stated.
He reaffirmed that the U.S. commitment to Europe remains unwavering, noting that the troop adjustment does not signal a retreat but a strategic realignment.
“The United States remains fully committed to Romania — as a trusted NATO ally, a vital strategic partner, and a driving force for security in Europe. Our strong presence and enduring engagement across the continent remain steadfast, including continued support for the Eastern Sentry operation,” he added.
The remarks underscore Washington’s confidence in Romania’s growing military capacity and its pivotal role in strengthening NATO’s eastern defense posture amid evolving security dynamics in Europe.
