U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced new travel restrictions yesterday against Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel, citing his role in the violent suppression of mass protests in 2021.

Rubio stated, “The United States is imposing visa restrictions on key figures of the Cuban regime President Díaz-Canel, Minister of the Revolutionary Armed Forces Álvaro López Miera, Minister of the Interior Lázaro Álvarez Casas, and their close relatives for their involvement in the regime’s brutality against the Cuban people.”

These sanctions will also affect the close family members of these Cuban leaders.

“The State Department is also adding the regime-controlled building ‘Torre K’ to the Cuba Restricted List to help prevent U.S. dollars from financing the Cuban regime’s repression,” Rubio posted on platform X.

“While the Cuban people suffer from shortages of food, water, medicine, and electricity, the regime wastes money enriching its inner circle,” he added.

Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez responded on X, saying:

“The U.S. may have the power to impose travel bans on revolutionary leaders and wage a prolonged, merciless economic war against Cuba, but it does not have the power to break the will of the Cuban people or its leadership.”
