For the first time in his new term, U.S. President Donald Trump has imposed sanctions on Russia related to its ongoing war in Ukraine, targeting two of the country’s largest oil companies — Rosneft and Lukoil.
The U.S. Department of the Treasury, which issued the sanctions, said it is prepared to take further action and urged Moscow to immediately agree to a ceasefire in its war against Ukraine, according to Reuters.
“Given President Putin’s refusal to end this senseless war, the Treasury will sanction Russia’s two largest oil companies that are funding the Kremlin’s war machine,” said U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent in an official statement.
He added: “We encourage our allies to join us and uphold these sanctions to ensure unified pressure on Russia.”
The new measures are seen as part of Washington’s broader effort to cut off Russia’s financial resources that sustain its military operations in Ukraine, signaling a tougher stance from the Trump administration toward Moscow.
