U.S. forces have killed a senior leader of the terrorist group Islamic State (ISIS) during an operation in Syria’s Aleppo province on Friday, the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced.
The raid resulted in the death of high-ranking ISIS leader Dhiya Zawba Muslih al-Hardani and his two adult sons, both affiliated with ISIS, CENTCOM said in its statement.
“These ISIS members posed a threat to U.S. and coalition forces, as well as to the new Syrian government,” the statement added. It also noted that three women and three children were present at the targeted location but were unharmed during the operation, according to Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL).
ISIS emerged amid the chaos of Syria’s civil war and seized large areas in both Syria and neighboring Iraq over a decade ago. Although the group has since suffered major defeats, the U.S. continues to carry out operations and airstrikes to prevent its resurgence.
