The U.S. State Department announced that it has imposed sanctions on former Montenegrin officials suspected of engaging in high-level corruption and supporting international drug trafficking operations.
The sanctioned individuals are:
- Milo Božović, former mayor of Budva and current member of parliament.
- Vesna Medenica, former President of the Supreme Court of Montenegro.
Both are now barred from entering the United States.
According to Washington, Božović allegedly abused his public office to support organized crime and international drug trafficking networks. Meanwhile, Medenica is accused of leveraging her judicial position to assist a smuggling organization by leaking court information, influencing verdicts, and accepting bribes in the form of cash and real estate.
“This decision reaffirms the United States’ commitment to combat drug trafficking, transnational criminal organizations, and corruption that threatens U.S. national security interests in the Western Balkans and beyond,” the State Department said in its statement.
