U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio will travel next week to Mexico and Ecuador, the State Department announced in an official statement.

The visit comes as President Donald Trump’s administration seeks to strengthen efforts to combat illegal immigration to the U.S., target drug cartels, and reduce China’s influence in the Latin American region.

Rubio, the first Latino-American Secretary of State, has refocused U.S. diplomacy on the region since taking office. This trip marks the latest in a series of engagements in Latin America. Earlier this year, he visited several Central American and Caribbean countries on his first official overseas trip as a senior U.S. diplomat. He returned to the Caribbean in March as part of a strategy to renew U.S. engagement in the region.

According to Reuters, Rubio’s visits are considered crucial in U.S. efforts to enhance cooperation with regional allies on security issues, migration, and economic challenges linked to Chinese interventions.
