The U.S. Supreme Court has struck down President Donald Trump’s executive order seeking to limit birthright citizenship.
The Court declined to overturn a 150-year legal precedent and the constitutional language guaranteeing citizenship by birth, BBC reported.
Trump had sought to end automatic U.S. citizenship for children born in the United States to parents who are either undocumented immigrants or are residing in the country on temporary visas.
His executive order had previously been blocked by lower courts, which ultimately led the case to the nation’s highest court.
Opponents argued that the order violated the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which guarantees that all persons “born or naturalized” in the United States are citizens.
