The U.S. administration has announced a delay in the implementation of a 50 percent tariff on European Union products, pushing the date from June 1st to July 9th. The decision came after a phone call between U.S. President Donald Trump and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, reports Rks News.

Trump described the call as “very good” and said the tariff delay would give both sides sufficient time to negotiate a new trade agreement. Earlier this month, he had threatened to impose the tax on all European imports, accusing the EU of being “formed to take advantage of the U.S.” and labeling it a “difficult partner.”

Following the announcement, Ursula von der Leyen wrote on the platform “X” that the EU and the U.S. share “the closest and most functional trade relationship in the world” and expressed the bloc’s readiness to accelerate talks.

European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security, Maroš Šefčovič, also stated that the EU remains committed to a fair agreement based on mutual respect and not on threats.
