Italy may not be among the countries directly threatened by new U.S. tariffs, but this has not stopped Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni from openly expressing her position to U.S. President Donald Trump.

Meloni said she disagrees with Trump’s announcement of new tariffs, describing the move as a “mistake.”

“Anticipating an increase in tariffs against countries that have chosen to contribute to Greenland’s security is a mistake, and I do not agree with it,” she stated.

The Italian prime minister confirmed that she had spoken with Trump a few hours earlier, during which she conveyed her views on the issue.

“I think he was interested in listening, but it seems to me that, from the American perspective, the message coming from this side of the Atlantic was not clear,” Meloni added, without revealing Trump’s direct response.

She suggested that there may have been a “problem of understanding and communication” between Europe and the United States regarding the decision by some European countries to deploy a limited number of troops to Greenland.

According to Meloni, this decision should not be interpreted as “anti-American.”

She therefore emphasized that dialogue must resume and escalation should be avoided.
