The United Kingdom has approved the use of its bases by the United States to carry out strikes against Iranian targets linked to the Strait of Hormuz.

Downing Street had previously allowed U.S. forces to use British bases for operations aimed at preventing Iran from launching missiles that could threaten British interests or lives.

However, ministers agreed during a meeting today to expand the use of British bases by the U.S. to also include the protection of ships in the Strait of Hormuz, according to BBC.

The UK will not be directly involved in the strikes, and Downing Street stated that “the principles underpinning the United Kingdom’s approach to the conflict remain unchanged.”

A Downing Street spokesperson said ministers agreed that the bases could be used for “U.S. defensive operations” targeting “capabilities being used to attack shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.”

He added that “ministers emphasized the urgent need for de-escalation and a swift resolution to the war.”
