The United Kingdom’s Foreign Secretary, Yvette Cooper, has reiterated her call for Lebanon to be “urgently included” in the US-Iran ceasefire agreement, describing Israeli strikes on Lebanon on Wednesday as “completely wrong,” according to the BBC.
“We have witnessed massive civilian displacement in Lebanon with serious humanitarian consequences,” Cooper said.
“This escalation is harmful, it is wrong… we want the ceasefire to be extended to include Lebanon,” she added.
Cooper was later asked to comment on remarks by the Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister, who stated that the Strait of Hormuz is not in international waters and that safe passage depends on the “goodwill of Iran and Oman.”
She rejected this, affirming that freedom of navigation applies to international transit routes under maritime law, and emphasized that “countries cannot simply appropriate these types of international transit routes and unilaterally impose fees.”
