British Foreign Secretary David Lammy visited Kosovo on April 2, meeting with President Vjosa Osmani to discuss bilateral relations, regional stability, and Kosovo’s European integration path. Following their meeting, Lammy reaffirmed the United Kingdom’s strong ties with Kosovo and its support for key international aspirations.

Strengthening UK-Kosovo Relations

Lammy emphasized the historical relationship between the two nations, recalling former Prime Minister Tony Blair’s role in NATO’s intervention in Kosovo. He noted that the UK remains committed to supporting Kosovo, particularly in challenging global times.

“It is a great feeling to return to Kosovo. The strong ties between our people are invaluable to me and my colleagues in the new administration. You welcomed Tony Blair here last year, and his role in NATO’s intervention was one of his greatest achievements. The progress Kosovo has made since then is remarkable, and we must support it in these challenging times,” Lammy stated.

Call for Normalization with Serbia

The British Foreign Secretary addressed Kosovo’s ongoing dialogue with Serbia, stressing the importance of a sustainable and peaceful normalization process. He reiterated the UK’s commitment to Kosovo’s security through its contributions to KFOR and encouraged Kosovo’s government to work towards integrating the Serbian community and advancing EU-led talks.

“We want to see a stable and peaceful normalization between Kosovo and Serbia. The UK remains a significant contributor to KFOR, which is essential for your security. I hope the next government will address the needs of all citizens, including making progress on the integration of Kosovo Serbs and fully engaging in the EU-facilitated dialogue,” Lammy said.

Backing Kosovo’s European Integration

Lammy confirmed the UK’s support for Kosovo’s membership in the Council of Europe, highlighting its importance in Kosovo’s Euro-Atlantic journey.

“It is crucial to see Kosovo progressing on its Euro-Atlantic path. With UK support, I hope you will soon join the Council of Europe,” he added.

Expanding Strategic Cooperation

President Osmani and Lammy also discussed deepening strategic cooperation between Kosovo and the UK in defense and economic sectors. Osmani proposed a formal agreement to strengthen collaboration in these key areas.

Lammy expressed his intention to return to Kosovo in the coming months to further advance bilateral relations.
