Pat McFadden, the UK Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, clarified that the recent US-Israel military actions against Iran should not be interpreted as a NATO conflict. He emphasized that the alliance was not designed for “this kind of situation unfolding in the Middle East.”

NATO, founded in 1949 by 12 countries including the United States and the United Kingdom, operates under the principle of Article 5, which considers an attack on one member as an attack on all. McFadden stressed that the current conflict is “not a NATO war” but rather a “US-Israel operation.”

He reaffirmed the UK’s deep commitment to NATO, signaling that while London supports the alliance, it does not equate US-Israel actions in the region with collective NATO engagement.
