UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has reiterated his call for a fundamental shift in the situation in Gaza, describing the current conditions as a “humanitarian catastrophe.”
In an interview with the BBC, Starmer stated that if Israel does not halt its attacks, the United Kingdom will recognize the State of Palestine in September.
“The situation on the ground in Gaza must change. There is a humanitarian catastrophe, and that is why I have said that if this does not materially change, then of course we will assess this when we get to September, and we will recognize Palestine,” Starmer declared.
The Prime Minister also emphasized that the British government has consistently demanded the release of hostages held by Hamas.
“They have been held for a very, very long time in absolutely intolerable conditions. So that must happen—absolutely,” he stressed.
Starmer’s remarks signal increasing pressure on Israel to change course amid growing international criticism, and reflect a potential policy shift by the UK towards Palestinian statehood.
