The United Kingdom is set to host a closed-door meeting on Thursday with senior military leaders from the “coalition of the willing,” as they develop plans for a proposed peacekeeping force for Ukraine.
Over 20 countries are expected to be involved. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer is scheduled to attend the afternoon session after his first visit to Barrow, where he will inspect a cabin for one of the next-generation British nuclear-powered submarines.
Plans for a Western-led peacekeeping force in Ukraine are reportedly moving into an operational phase. Senior military officers from countries in the “coalition of the willing,” led by the UK and France, will meet at the UK’s Permanent Joint Headquarters in Northwood to discuss practical details.
However, significant obstacles remain. Russian President Vladimir Putin has stated that Moscow will not tolerate the presence of any NATO member troops in Ukraine, regardless of their role.
The United States has also shown reluctance to provide the necessary air coverage that potential contributing nations claim they need for the mission.
