The United Kingdom will not take part in any offensive military operations against Iran, Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson has confirmed.
Her remarks come after U.S. President Donald Trump warned that American forces could target Iran’s energy facilities and bridges starting Tuesday if Tehran does not reopen the strategic Strait of Hormuz. The comments were reported by The Guardian.
Phillipson stated that it is up to Trump to explain his rhetoric and approach to the escalating crisis.
“That is not language or an approach this government would take,” she said. “Our position, as set out by Prime Minister Keir Starmer, is that we will not be involved in offensive actions.”
Trump’s statements on social media have drawn criticism, with some observers warning they could amount to threats of war crimes.
So far, the UK has maintained limited involvement in the conflict, focusing on defensive measures. Royal Air Force fighter jets have conducted patrol flights aimed at protecting allied countries in the Persian Gulf from drone attacks.
Prime Minister Starmer has also authorized the United States to use British bases for strikes targeting Iranian missile facilities that threaten regional allies or maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz.
