This is the largest exchange between the two countries in almost five months.
Moscow and Kiev have carried out more than 50 prisoner swaps since Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine more than two years ago, despite ongoing hostilities.
The United Arab Emirates brokered the latest prisoner swap deal.
“Today, another 90 of our citizens have returned to their homes from Russian captivity,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a social media post.
“We do not forget all our people who are under Russian captivity. We continue to work for the release of each of them”, he added.
Russia said that 90 of its soldiers “who were in danger for their lives while being held captive, have returned from the territory controlled by the Kiev regime”.
The freed Russian prisoners will then be sent to Moscow “for treatment and rehabilitation”, the Russian Defense Ministry said, confirming that Russia had released 90 Ukrainian soldiers in return.
In the latest exchange, which took place at the end of May, Moscow and Kiev exchanged 75 prisoners. That exchange was also carried out with the mediation of the United Arab Emirates.
Meanwhile, in February both sides said they exchanged 100 prisoners, in the first exchange of prisoners since Moscow accused Kiev of shooting down a plane carrying captured Ukrainian soldiers./REL
