Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that a suspect has been arrested in connection with the assassination of former Parliament Speaker Andriy Parubiy, who was shot on a street in the western city of Lviv.
“Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko and the head of the Security Service of Ukraine, Vasyl Maliuk, have just reported the arrest of a suspect in the murder of Andriy Parubiy,” Zelensky wrote on X on the evening of August 31. He added that investigative actions are ongoing and that all available information will be shared with the public. Zelensky thanked law enforcement officers for their swift and coordinated work.
According to local reports, Parubiy, 54, was shot around midday on August 30 on Yefremova Street, near his residence, and died instantly from his injuries.
The Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine has opened an investigation into the killing as a premeditated murder. Some of Parubiy’s colleagues have accused Russia of orchestrating the attack.
Lawmaker Mykola Knyazhytskiy described the assassination as “revenge by Russia for his positions,” citing Parubiy’s support for Ukraine’s sovereignty, security, and unity in the face of Russian aggression.
Parubiy played a key role during the 2013–2014 Maidan protests, known as the Revolution of Dignity, which opposed then-President Viktor Yanukovych’s decision to pivot Ukraine away from the European Union toward Russia, a move that ultimately led to Yanukovych’s ousting and flight to Russia.
