More than 100,000 people in the Ukrainian port city of Mykolaiv have been left without heating following a Russian drone attack on energy infrastructure, President Volodymyr Zelensky announced today.
“Those who claim to seek peace and negotiations do not act this way,” Zelensky said, emphasizing that emergency teams are working to restore heating in the affected areas.
He called on Kyiv’s allies to take decisive action to force Russia into peace talks.
Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal stated that Russian drones deliberately targeted the Mykolaiv thermal power plant overnight, aiming to leave residents without heating in freezing temperatures and create a humanitarian crisis.
Regional governor Vitaliy Kim reported that the attack caused a fire, which firefighters quickly brought under control. A 64-year-old man was injured and hospitalized, while five residential buildings sustained damage.
Russia has consistently targeted Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, causing widespread blackouts and heating shortages. Moscow denies these accusations, claiming it only strikes facilities supplying the Ukrainian military.
