Kyiv has initiated one of its largest drone attacks on Russia since the beginning of the war, targeting power plants and an oil refinery, while Moscow’s forces made further advances towards a key city in eastern Ukraine, officials said on Sunday.

Russian rocket attacks on Kharkiv injured over 40 people, including five children, prompting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to renew calls to allies to allow Kyiv to deploy Western-supplied missiles deeper into enemy territory and mitigate the threat of further attacks.

The fighting comes at a critical moment in the two-and-a-half-year conflict, with Russia pushing an offensive in eastern Ukraine as it seeks to drive out Ukrainian forces that crossed its western border in a surprise incursion on August 6.

Last week, Russia conducted its heaviest airstrikes on Ukraine of the war, targeting energy infrastructure as part of a barrage campaign with drones and rockets, which is said to have killed thousands of civilians and troops since the conflict began in February 2022, Reuters writes.
