The commander of Ukraine’s army, Oleksandr Syrsky, has pledged to increase the “scale and depth” of attacks against Russia, according to a statement released on Sunday. He asserted that these strikes are proving “effective” and that Kyiv will target only military objectives.
“Of course, we will continue. We will increase the scale and depth” of attacks, Syrsky said during a conversation with journalists.
These declarations come as diplomatic efforts to end the three-year war between Russia and Ukraine have stalled. The last direct meeting between the two sides was nearly three weeks ago, with no further talks currently planned.
“We will not simply remain on the defensive. Because this brings nothing and ultimately leads to retreat, loss of people, and territory,” Syrsky stated.
Syrsky also conceded that Russia holds some advantages in drone warfare, particularly in the production of fiber-optic drones, which are difficult to shoot down. “In this field, unfortunately, they have an advantage both in number and in the range of drone use,” he noted.
He further claimed that Ukraine still controls 90 square kilometers in Russia’s Kursk region, where Kyiv launched a cross-border offensive last August. “These are preventive actions on our part, in response to a possible enemy attack,” he added.
Moscow currently controls about one-fifth of Ukraine and claims four Ukrainian regions as its own, in addition to Crimea, which it annexed in 2014. Kyiv has accused Moscow of deliberately sabotaging a peace agreement to prolong its offensive against Ukraine and seize more territory.
