Ukrainian Air Forces reported via Telegram that they shot down a Russian Su-34 fighter jet after it conducted an airstrike on Zaporizhia, dropping bombs in the city.
According to Zaporizhia Governor Ivan Fedorov, although the plane was downed, one person was killed and two others injured during the overnight airstrikes.
In addition, drone attacks in Vinnytsia and Kirovohrad regions caused damage to local infrastructure, local authorities reported.
The Su-34, a supersonic tactical bomber originally developed during the Soviet era, has been in serial production since 2006, with approximately 150 units built to date.
Glide bombs, a key tactical weapon used by Russian forces, are designed to strike defensive lines in Ukraine but are often deployed against cities behind the front lines, according to DPA. These bombs can be dropped from several kilometers away, making the aircraft largely immune to air defense systems.
Zaporizhia in southern Ukraine and Kharkiv in the northeast have repeatedly been targeted with glide bombs since the Russian invasion, which has now lasted more than three and a half years.
